Mentawai "out of the season".
Star Koat scored perfect and uncrowded waves in January.
While all the surfers’ attention is on the Northern hemisphere, more specific on the Hawaiian season, a group of Japanese surfers dreamed about surfing perfect and uncrowded Indo waves in January with the same ALOHA spirit. Up to the task and ready to kick off the season, Star Koat was the boat chosen to host this surf trip to the Mentawai Islands. Time to pull up the anchor and get the 2016 season started.
After a good look at the forecast, our surf guide Luis Belo and the photographer Bernard Obeid welcome the guests on board departing straight to the playground area, north Mentawai, to a few warm up sessions and fire the boys up to surf the expected swell towards the end of the trip at Ht’s.
Following a couple of fun days at Burger World, our Captain started to navigate south, heading to the South Sipora area to surf good waves close to Lance's Left while waiting the swell. Another couple of days with clean and rippable surfing conditions at Bintang and Monkey Jumps.
An epic afternoon session at Lance’s Left, with the swell on the rise, was the sign to Luis make the call, and early in the next morning Star Koat dropped the anchor at the famous right hander, Hollow Trees known as Lance’s Right as well, for what would be the perfect end for a Mentawai boat trip out of the season. “With the wind conditions coming from west as we expect this time of the year, we knew the right handers would be the pick, and for sure Ht’s would never disappoint”. Said our guide Luis Belo watching the sets peeling along the reef as the sun rise.
The vibe on the channel was memorable, with the swell coming from south direction and occasionally that west sets breaking all the way from the “Office” till the inside. Our guests could enjoy the entire day sharing the line up with only another boat and a couple of smiley locals. Perfect waves in the 3 to 5-foot range blessed our Japanese warriors offering the dreamed “Perfect Indo waves” in January.
After 6 days surfing uncrowded waves followed by cold beers, fresh seafood BBQ with friends, our guests were exhausted and ready to go home. We are thankful for Yuki Miyabe and Newton Yanagita, our Japanese Embassies, for putting together this amazing group to share the line up with us. “Was such a unique experience sharing the boat with those guys, amazing people and dedicated surfers, was truly a pleasure to capture the images of these trip.” Shared Bernard with our team.
We can’t wait for the next one!
