“The Hole” Grail
The peak season in the Islands has being dominate by southerly winds and with another solid swell building up towards half way into our next trip on board Star Koat, Bruno Veiga and the crew start to dream on a perfect chance to surf one of the Mentawai pearls, “The Hole”.
Joining the crew for this epic crusade, a mixed group of tough Ozzies with plenty experience in the area, searching for a rejuvenating surfing break away. In addition, to complete the charter a few good mates of our guide, including the talent photographer from South Africa Peter-John James Taljaard, who brilliantly registered this epic trip. After welcoming everybody on board, they all agreed with Bruno’s plan and the boat departed heading south later that night.
The initial days were the perfect warm-up for what was about to come, a couple of days at Lance’s Left with 3 to 4-foot waves breaking consistently along the reef, producing plenty of fun for all the boats around the area. After a quick chat with the other guides Bruno got his final “sign” that The Hole would be the winner shot.
The Hole is located on the south end of the archipelago; it is a shallow left-hander that offers a hollow and fast barrel from the drop to the end. Perfect and friendly on the medium size swell, but powerful, long and intense on a solid day. The long journey and the lack of options around the place makes all surf guides wonder before taking the guests over there.
After a stop at Thunders on the way waiting for the swell, we finally arrive at “THE HOLE GRAIL”, for what it would be three blessed days of uncountable barrels. “Dropping the anchor and watching those waves peeling along the reef just felt like heaven.” Commented Bruno relieved and assure to be at the right place. The swell was there, 5-foot waves up to perfection, challenging enough to bring enjoyment to all the guests.
We ended up sharing the line up with two other boats during the swell, but waves would not stop, breaking all day long. “The vibe out there was undescribed; you could see happiness blasting from every single person.” Bruno again trying to summarize the feeling on board. The abundance wasn’t restrict just for the surfing, the boys and crew were hooking fishes every day, was an extravagance of freshness on the menu, sashimi, grilled, local style and a “la Brasileira”, a delicious exhibition of skills from our Chef Kabeza.
If it was not enough, Bruno pulled another rabbit out of the hat deciding to stay an extra day, waiting for the others to leave and have the lineup for themselves next day. The return to Padang was just a statement that something magical was guiding those boys over their journey, a glassy and uncrowded session at Rag’s Right and another one on a not so good but empty Green Bush topped the whole “Saint” experience.
In behalf of our entire crew, I want to thanks World Surfaris team for sending us this amazing group of top blokes and all the boys for these amazing moments, was an honor having you guys on board.
